Citation Trends, Competitor Citations & Content Recommendations

Track citation trends over time, see which competitors are cited instead of you, and act on AI-driven content recommendations.

Citation Trends, Competitor Citations & Content Recommendations

The Insights group inside the AI Search area turns raw scan data into direction: how your citations move over time, who is being cited instead of you, and which articles to act on next.

Citation Trends

Citation Trends aggregates the per-article citation statistics collected by each scan into two charts:

  • Citation Trends — total article citations per weekly period
  • Platform Breakdown — citations per AI platform over the same periods, one line per platform

Trends need at least two scan periods with citation data before the charts appear, so expect them from your second weekly scan onwards. Inside the AI Search Hub the same charts are hidden until there is enough data.

Competitor Citations

When an AI platform answers one of your monitored queries by citing someone else, that URL is recorded as a competitor citation. The Competitor Citations page shows:

  • Competitor Citations — total competitor references found
  • Unique Competitors — how many distinct domains were cited
  • Top Platform — the AI platform giving competitors the most citations
  • Top Competitor Domains — ranked domains with the platforms citing them
  • Recent Competitor Citations — the latest examples with the exact query, platform, date, and a link to the cited page

Competitor data is collected during the AI visibility scan, so it fills in alongside your own citation data. Use the query column to spot the answers you are losing, then open the competing page to see what it covers that you do not.

Content Recommendations

Recommendations combine your GEO scores with citation history and sort articles into three buckets:

BucketHow an article qualifiesWhat to do
High GEO, Low CitationsGEO score above 70 but fewer than 3 citations in the latest periodThe content is AI-ready — push distribution, internal links, and promotion
Trending UpCitations in the latest period are at least 1.5× the previous periodDouble down: refresh, expand, and build related content
Needs RefreshCited at least once but not updated in 90+ daysUpdate facts and statistics so the citation quality holds

Each bucket keeps up to 10 articles; the card shows the top 5. High GEO articles are ordered by score, trending articles by citation count, and stale articles oldest-first.

Closing the gap: analysis and rewrite suggestions

From the Improve Your Citations section of the AI Search Hub, open an article to run a citation gap analysis. It returns prioritised suggestions with an estimated impact score:

  • Add Statistics — concrete, sourced numbers AI answers like to quote
  • Add FAQ — question-and-answer blocks that match how people prompt
  • Expert Quotes — attributed expert commentary
  • Structured Data — schema markup, including FAQ and HowTo
  • Freshness — updated dates, data, and examples
  • General — other article-specific improvements

Each suggestion carries a priority of high, medium, or low. Applying one queues the GEO remediation worker, which rewrites the draft with that fix, re-scores it, and republishes it — so the insight loop ends in an actual content change rather than a to-do list.

Plan requirements

Citation Trends, Competitor Citations, Content Recommendations, and the citation analysis and rewrite suggestions are Business plan or higher features.
